Web Interface End of Life?

Ok, so I’m behind the curve with this post, but I thought it might be useful for my loyal readers (all 6 of you) that might not have heard about this yet.

Web Interface 5.4 will be the LAST version of Web Interface released.  It goes EOL in 2015.  Why?  WI has been wildly popular and successful, right?  You’ve already invested countless hours making the color scheme and logos JUST the way your marketing team wants them to be, and you don’t want to have to do it over!!  Well, the why part is easy.  It was written in J#, and Microsoft has decided to announce that language is end of life.  Alas, that also means the inevitible death of any application written using it.

So, what should you do then??  Cloud Gateway is the official replacement.  However, I (and several Citrix SE’s I’ve spoken with) would urge you to not make the switch just yet.  Even if you’re building a new farm today, or upgrading an old one to get to current – stick with WI.  Cloud Gateway/Storefront/Dazzle/et al, they just aren’t quite “ready” yet.  They are still on major rev 1.  The color schemes are downright horrible, and last I heard, you cannot change them (yet – “next version”).

Also, this isn’t DIRECTLY related to Web Interface, but it IS an EOL announcement:  If you have a CAG, I’d start learning NetScaler.  Here’s a hint – GET YOUR CCNA FIRST!!  Or better yet, tell your networking team to start learning NetScaler.
